Chinese Idiom And Its Story- Fix One’s Fence After Losing Sheep

Once upon a time, a man raises lots of sheep. One morning, he finds one sheep is lost. He checks carefully about his fence and finds a hole, it is obviously that the sheep was taken away by a wolf. His neighbor advises him: try to fix the fence as soon as possible. The man thinks, well, since the sheep has been lost, there is no use to fix the fence now. So he turns dead ears to other’s advice. On the second morning, he finds another sheep is lost. Obviously the wolf has come into the sheepfold again. He

regrets very much about his laziness and
not taking others’ advice. So he goes to fix the sheepfold. From then on, none of his sheep is lost.

If the man fixes his sheepfold immediately after one sheep is lost, then the second sheep won’t be taken away by the wolf; fortunately, he takes his neighbor’s advice at last and avoids more losses. This story means that it is common to make a mistake or encounter a setback. The most important thing is to try to learn some lessons from every mistake or setback. Only in this way, can we make progress.
